Buying used woodworking machinery from a private party

Most woodworking equipment changes hands shop to shop. The machines last decades — but what they are worth is decided by software, not by wear.

What the market actually shows

The used woodworking market is deep and largely peer-to-peer, with most listings placed directly by shops rather than dealers.

Look at the router column. An Accord at $145,000 and a Rover C 6.50 at $15,000 are both CNC routers that will cut a cabinet part. Roughly a ten-to-one spread, and it is not explained by wear. It is controls, spindle count, tool changer, software support, and whether anything modern can drive the machine.

The check that decides everything: the post processor

This is the single most expensive mistake in used woodworking equipment, and it is invisible in a listing photograph.

Your design and nesting software has to output code the machine understands, through a post processor written for that specific control. For current machines this is routine. For older ones it can be difficult, unsupported, or expensive — shop discussion of CNC post processors for cabinet software has cited figures around $20,000, which is more than a $15,000 used router costs.

Before you agree a price:

  • Name your software and version, and confirm with your software vendor that a working post exists for that exact control. Not the machine model — the control.
  • Ask whether the machine's own software licences transfer, and what the builder charges to reissue them.
  • Ask whether the builder still supports the control and whether drives and boards are available.
  • Get the existing post processor and tool library from the seller in writing as part of the sale if they have one running.

A machine with an unsupportable control is not a bargain. It is a project with a payment attached.

The rest of the inspection

  • Spindle hours and bearing condition. Router spindles are a wear item and a rebuild is a real number.
  • Vacuum system and pump. On a nested-based machine, hold-down is production. A tired pump shows up as parts moving mid-cut.
  • Tool changer function. Cycle every pocket, not one.
  • On edgebanders, the glue pot and premelt. The most abused subsystem on the machine and the most expensive to sort out.
  • Dust collection requirements. A used router with no ducting or an undersized collector is an incomplete purchase; include it in the budget and in the financing.
  • Power and rigging. Phase, voltage, transformer needs, dock access, and disassembly. Rigging is rarely in the asking price.

What the lender checks

Woodworking machinery is untitled, so ownership rests on documents and a clean UCC search, with the lender perfecting by filing a UCC-1.

  • The seller's exact legal entity name and state of organization — searches are name-driven and a misspelling returns nothing, which is not the same as clean.
  • The serial number recorded off the machine, not off the listing.
  • The financing statements read in full. Shops that have taken working capital loans frequently have blanket liens covering all business assets, which can capture the machine without naming it.
  • Written payoff and UCC-3 termination from any secured lender, obtained directly.
  • Funds paid lender to seller directly, never through the buyer.

And the rule that decides older machines: lenders underwrite equipment age at loan maturity, not at purchase. With a ceiling around ten years old at payoff, a five-year term needs a fairly recent machine, while a three-year term makes an older one workable. When an older router is declined, ask about a shorter term before assuming the deal is dead.

Expect used financing a point to a few points above comparable new on shorter terms, down payments commonly 10% to 25%, and roughly three to seven extra days versus a dealer purchase. Rigging, install, electrical, and dust collection are usually financeable if quoted before closing — ask, rather than paying cash for them afterward.

One thing about timing

Used woodworking equipment supply is counter-cyclical in an uncomfortable way. Shop liquidation auctions flood the market precisely when the remodeling cycle turns down — which is also when your own order book is thinner.

Harvard's remodeling projections have pointed to spending growth decelerating to roughly 0.5% year over year, trailing inflation. If that is the environment, expect more equipment available at better prices, and be correspondingly more careful that you are buying capacity you can fill rather than capacity that is cheap.

Buying a bargain router in a soft market is only a bargain if the work arrives.

The bottom line

Woodworking machinery lasts decades and depreciates on software. Confirm the post processor and control support before you talk price, budget rigging and dust collection into the deal, and get the seller's legal name and serial number to your lender early.
