What should you check before buying used auto shop equipment?
Lifts, aligners, tire machines, frame machines and paint booths change hands between shops all the time, and plenty of them sell by owner. Here’s what used shop equipment is listing for, what to check on each piece before you pay, and how to put a whole bay on one payment.

Listed asking prices we found, checked October 29, 2026, not appraisals or offers. The Northridge rows appear to come from one reseller posting in Craigslist’s by-owner section. Freight and installation are extra unless a listing says otherwise. Each one is in Sources below.
The used Rotary two-post is listed at less than a third of its new price. The used Garmat booth, with its make-up air, is $20,000, and a new 26-foot booth without a heater is $25,890.
Can you finance a single used car lift or tire machine?
Usually as part of a bigger package. Our usual minimum is about $15,000, and each single lift, tire changer and balancer in the table comes in under it. So most shops put the whole bay on one agreement, from the lifts and aligner to the tire changer and balancer, plus installation on qualifying transactions.
Take four used listings from the table: the Rotary two-post, the Hunter rack, the Coats changer and the Road Force balancer. They come to $18,235, and for an established shop that’s about $379 a month over 60 months.
A full buildout, whether a new location or a few added bays, can go on as one project, with progress or pre-funding if a vendor wants a deposit.
Most shops own lifts and frame machines on an equipment finance agreement, since they outlast any term. Alignment cameras and software update every few years, so a fair market value equipment lease can make sense there. A financed piece and a leased piece need two agreements, but the $15,000 minimum counts on the whole bundle. Our $1 buyout vs. FMV lease guide covers both, and our auto repair equipment financing page lists what we fund.
What should you check before buying a used car lift?
Check four things first:
- The ALI gold label and directory. The Automotive Lift Institute certifies lift models to ANSI/ALI ALCTV, its standard for how lifts are built, tested and validated. ALI says to look for its Gold Certification Label before you buy; with no gold label, the lift isn’t certified. Certification covers a model, not a maker, so look up the exact model in ALI’s online directory, and don’t accept “pending” certification.
- The last annual inspection. ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2020 calls for a qualified lift inspector to inspect every lift at least once a year. Ask for the last report, and book a new one once it’s installed.
- Your slab. ALI’s installation standard, ANSI/ALI ALIS:2022, covers concrete work and foundations, and ALI points you to the maker’s installation procedures. Check that model’s slab requirements against your own floor.
- Jacks and the reinstall. The used Hunter rack includes two rolling jacks; on the new BendPak they’re extra. Ask who takes the lift down and puts it back up, and get that quoted with it, since installation can go on the agreement on qualifying transactions.
I’d pass on a used lift with no label and no model number.
What should you check on a used alignment machine, tire changer or balancer?
On an aligner, you’re paying for the software and vehicle specs as much as the hardware.
- Software and specs. Hunter releases a WinAlign vehicle database update twice a year, and the May 2026 release added 536 new records and 2,338 updates. The $3,500 aligner in our table lists 2021 specs, and the HawkEye Elite lists 2025. Ask which version is loaded and whether updates carry over, and call a Hunter representative before you buy, since that’s who schedules upgrades.
- Cameras, targets and clamps. The HawkEye Elite uses four high-resolution cameras to measure the wheels. Count the targets and clamps, ask for the last calibration check, and have it checked again in your bay.
- The rack. Check the turn plates, slip plates and jacks, and have the installer level the rack.
- Tire changer. Look over the clamp jaws, bead breaker and assist arm, and mount a low-profile tire before you pay.
- Balancer. Ask for the cones, adapters and hood, run it through calibration, and ask what warranty comes with it.
What should you check on a used paint booth or frame machine?
A booth comes with fans, ductwork, lighting, electrical and fire suppression, and a heated booth adds a burner and a gas line.
- What’s on the pallets. The used Garmat in our table is broken down, labeled and strapped to pallets, with a prep station, a mixing room and make-up air. Get a written list of what’s included.
- Power and gas. That Garmat’s make-up air runs on three-phase power and natural gas, and the new iDeal booth needs a licensed electrician for the final hookups. Check your building’s service.
- Fire protection. NFPA 33 is the National Fire Protection Association’s standard for spray application using flammable or combustible materials. Ask whether the suppression system comes with the booth and who last serviced it, then ask your local fire department what it wants.
- Permit and filters. Installing a booth often takes a permit, so check before you buy. Budget for fresh filters.
Frame machines move more easily, but check them just as hard:
- The measuring system. Ask which one comes with the machine and how current its vehicle data is. The dealer page for the new 18-foot Chassis Liner offers a measuring kit as an $810 add-on.
- Power at the hook. In a BodyShop Business buying guide, Chief warns that a system with 10-ton rams may put as little as 4 tons on the hook. Ask what each tower pulls.
- The whole pulling system. The used Car-O-Liner’s one post is missing its hydraulic cylinder. Price missing parts before you offer.
We underwrite booths more carefully than lifts, because certification and software affect what a used booth is worth. With good credit, a used booth usually doesn’t need a down payment. There’s no age limit, though older equipment can be tougher to get done, and the term can’t outrun the equipment’s remaining useful life.
What does a bay of used equipment cost per month?
Three bundles from our table, for an established shop with no money down:
| Example amount | 36 months | 60 months | 72 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| $18,235: used two-post lift, alignment rack, tire changer and Road Force balancer | $580 | $379 | $329 |
| $30,990: used alignment rack plus a used HawkEye Elite | $985 | $643 | $559 |
| $41,717: new 18-foot frame machine plus a new side-downdraft booth | $1,327 | $866 | $752 |
Estimated monthly payments for an established shop (two or more years in business) on an equipment finance agreement with no money down, before installation, freight, taxes and fees. Examples, not quotes: actual payments depend on credit, the equipment and the term.

How does a private-party deal work with Five West?
Here’s what to expect on equipment you’re buying from another shop or a private seller.
- Usually no down payment with good credit, even on a private sale. Startups usually still put some money down.
- An application-only decision up to $500,000 on qualifying files, with no tax returns or financial statements.
- The same pace as a dealer deal. A first response typically comes within 1 to 2 business hours. Clean application-only files can be approved in as little as 30 minutes, and funding can follow in as little as 24 to 48 hours once documents are signed. The lien search and any inspection are part of the same file.
- We pay the seller. If the seller still owes on the equipment, we pay off their lender at closing so the lien is released, and the rest goes to the seller.
- Installation in the same payment on qualifying transactions. A private-party paint booth adds a lien search and an inspection or appraisal.
- One agreement for several pieces, so a lift, a tire changer and a balancer count together toward our usual $15,000 minimum.
Send each listing, its serial number and the seller’s details with your application, and we’ll tell you how the file looks before you pay anyone.
Opening your first shop? Startups are considered with verifiable trade experience, typically 700 or higher personal credit, a down payment and working capital left over; see our startup equipment financing guide. On a larger purchase, have your attorney read the bill of sale and ask your CPA about Section 179. Our guide to buying from a private seller covers lien checks and scams.

Can you finance a single used car lift or tire changer?
Usually as part of a bigger package. The usual minimum is about $15,000, so a lift, tire changer or balancer normally goes on one agreement with the rest of the bay. Installation can be included on qualifying transactions.
What should I check before buying a used car lift?
Look for the ALI Gold Certification Label and confirm the model in ALI’s directory of certified lifts. Ask for the last annual inspection report, since ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2020 calls for a qualified lift inspector to inspect lifts at least once a year. Check the maker’s slab requirements against your floor.
Do I need a down payment to buy used shop equipment from a private seller?
With good credit, usually not, even on a private sale. Startups usually still put some money down. If the seller still owes on the equipment, Five West pays off their lender at closing so the lien is released.
Can a used paint booth and its installation be financed together?
Yes, on qualifying transactions. Send a quote that lists the booth and the installation separately. A booth from a private seller adds a lien search and an inspection or appraisal.
How old can used auto shop equipment be to finance it?
There is no age limit, though older equipment can be tougher to get done. The term can’t outrun the equipment’s remaining useful life, so older equipment may get a shorter term.
Put the whole bay on one payment.
